The Girona Orchestra (OdG) was formed in Girona in Abril 1996 by a group of people connected through orchestral and choral music. The OdG is a well-established string chamber orchestra consisting of 16 professional musicians, the majority of whom are from or settled in Girona and its environs. Known as the Girona Orchestral Group until recently, the OdG changed its name for strictly artistic reasons, with the objective of becoming more associated with the Girona region, both inside and outside Catalunya.
It performs under the direction of Miquel Sunyer, Càndid Rodríguez and Pablo Heras-Casado, and also with conductors such as Josep Vicent, Jesús López Cóbos, Francesc Llongueres, Marnix W. Steffen and Xavier Puig among others.
Since 2005, an annual Concert Season has been developed, which is currently held in the new Girona Conference Centre (Auditori-Palau de Congressos de Girona). However, the OdG, on various occasions, has been invited to take part in productions organised by the Girona Conference Centre itself and previously by the city’s Mercè Concert Hall (Auditori de la Mercè).
It has also performed with instrumental and vocal soloists such as: Michel Moragues, Jaime Martín, Ara Malikian, Hans van Kerckhoven, Michel Lethiec, Josep Pizarro, Maria Hinojosa, and Raquel Andueza. Also with Catalan choirs such as: Cor de Noies de l’Orfeó Català, Cor Infantil de l’Orfeó Català, Coral Belles Arts de Sabadell, Cor de Cambra de l’Auditori Enric Granados de Lleida, and with numerous choirs from the Girona area.
For the Festival Castell de Peralada and the Cicle Claustre de St. Domènec, it was the resident orchestra from 1998 until 2004 for premiers and the interpretation of works by contemporary composers. The orchestra has also perfromed on various occasions in the Festival de Músiques Religioses i del Món de Girona and in festivals and events both inside and outside Catalunya. In Girona these include performances at Porta Ferrada, Cadaqués and Olot, among many others.
The orchestra’s repertoire draws mainly from the baroque through to contemporary composers. In this respect, it attempts to concentrate on the promotion of Catalunya’s historical musical heritage.
